Responding to Ross Douthat in the New York Times of May 6, 2017

I hope nobody outside Crackerstan was dumb enough to believe that Trump meant a single word he said, what with his reversing his position on nearly everything he spoke so angrily about sometimes within minutes. Trump's delivery epitomizes one of the Orwelllisms that people who never actually read the book don't know about. Just read a transcript of the Rose Garden triumphal speech, talking about deductions and premiums ... this is doubleplusgood duckspeak. Strings of superlatives and vacuous promises. The bill they are so anxious to repeal has reduced bankruptccies by 50%, reduced the uninsured significantly, and has led to none of the collapses or disasters that Republicans forecast as accurately as they predicted that the Bush tax cuts would lead to prosperity. And Mr. Douthat, you came closer than I've seen in a while to a worthy piece of writing but, no, you just had to stick your foot in it with that garbage about "you can keep your plan," a synthetic bit of empty outrage that has been about as vital to discussion as "political correctness" in campus speech codes.
